We look forward to your feedback!
Hi Shivani, Kristin, Jill, and Jacob
I thought your project was overall very well done. Your topic was about health outcomes of parents with chronically ill children, this was clearly stated. You guys did a land acknowledgement which was nice to include. The agenda was brief and to the point and the situation was detailed and showed the impact of the issue. The presentation was colorful, creative, and information was well organized. You included a video that was very impactful, showed the need for more services for this population and it was a good length of time. All the group members participated in the presentation with good eye contact and clear voices. Some points that stuck with me were: mothers’ parental fatigue is worse than fathers as well as the impact on the other non-disabled children involved in the family. In the environmental scan resources the connected care program, Slocan center, and family connections center were discussed. I think these are good resources. I’m sure there aren’t many resources to pick from for this topic so I understand that there may not have been any available in the interior. This project was great. Thanks for sharing!
Solution 1: Peer mentorship
You discussed the strengths and weaknesses.
Brings more resources to the family to look through
It is accessible from home → this acknowledges that the parents may not have the time to drive around to addition appointments for them.
The challenge is that it requires community participation
Solution 2: act and mindfulness
Web-based acceptance and commitment therapy intervention
Workshop with psychologist
Not tied to time and place –> the parents have more options for access
Requires digital literacy –> people may not have the ability to move through these websites
Solution 3 (priority) – screening
A tool that can be utilized by nurses to quantify parental distress and burn out
Rationale well explained
Standardized care, help to identify resources for struggling parents
Timely and tedious to develop this tool
I think this tool would be amazing to implement. It could be part of the pediatrics or general doctors routine or part of a nurses routines during her assessments as well. It could be very passive in their practice to take a quick look over the parents as they assess the child as well. It would ensure that this stress and struggle is caught early.
