This is our presentation, we look forward to your feedback.
Great presentation everyone! Your description of your population and issue was clear and concise. The video at the start provided good context for your identified problems and solutions without being too long. I researched immigrant and refugee health for seminar and found the same resources you covered in your environmental scan. I love that you included both international and local resources that tied into your solutions. Your presentation’s flow and delivery of information was easy to follow. I especially liked how you explained how each proposed solution could be applicable to Kamloops. Your choice of black text on white background looked clean, but the subtle graphics and more colourful backgrounds kept slides engaging. I did not notice any spelling or grammatical mistakes.
Everyone participated in the presentation. I though everyone’s speaking volume and pace was easy to understand. I thought you answered all questions thoroughly and demonstrated a deeper understanding of your research and proposed solutions than just what was included in the presentation.
Solution 1
In my own research, I found a lot of evidence showing that trained interpreters lead to better patient outcomes and patient satisfaction with the healthcare system. Especially when compared to refugees using family members as interpreters. It can be difficult enough to engage this population without language barriers. You did a good job explaining this in your strengths and weaknesses points.
Solution 2
I noticed your second solution is the only one without a title on the slide. When reviewing your slides, that was the only one I had to pause on and read more into. I only bring this up for the sake of consistency. Your slides are all well organized and easy to read, so finding information was not a problem. I thought the idea of teaching refugee children coping strategies was intriguing. I am curious how a three-day course would teach someone to navigate cultural differences. Let alone the big challenges your group brought up.
Solution 3
Your third solution is, of course, huge. Mental health screening in such a vulnerable population should be at least as important as any other assessment. In my own research, I found that refugees are often not provided with their own transportation. So I like that you included multiple methods of checking in on clients without leaning on in-office appointments. You went more in-depth on local implementation for your priority solution here and all of your points seem reasonable.
References
All your references are recent, with the oldest only being from 2020. You included a variety of sources from what should be credible sources – government reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, local resources, and Canadian statistics. I didn’t notice any errors in your Vancouver style citations and all references appear in your presentation.
Great presentation all! The presentation started off with a clear introduction to team members, the population being refugees, and the systemic barriers that this population faces, which complicates receiving mental health supports in Canada. You transitioned well by expressing that the purpose of your presentation is to explore solutions that promote advocacy, knowledge sharing, and psychosocial supports for refugees to mitigate these barriers. I also appreciated your trigger warning and offering the audience to step out if need be.
Overall, your presentation was well organized, clear, and solutions were relevant to your population. However, I did not find all solutions relevant to your problem (see later comments). The flow was easy to follow and kept me engaged, from the introduction, assessing the environmental scan, and further exploring your top three solutions with the final solution being your priority. This helped me understand what was available already for this population and what your team believed to be the most important interventions and why.
Solution 1: In-person trained interpreters – clear separated slides of what the solution is, rational why it was chosen, the successes, and challenges, and identifying if it were a priority solution or not. This solution is relevant to your population and problem.
Solution 2: Teaching Recovery Techniques – I did not find this solution relevant to your problem of “face systemic barriers that complicate receiving mental health support…”, although it is great for mental health support, how is it a solution to systemic barriers? This could have been explained more clearly.
Solution 3: Refugee mental health screening – I enjoyed how you Identified where this solution lacks, but then you make modifications to make it a stronger solution. Well done! Adaptions included making this solution feasible and relevant in Kamloops. This is a great priority solution as it involves Solution 1 by being offered in multiple languages or with a translator.
With the use of a PowerPoint, images, a colour scheme, and a video, you were able to convey your knowledge in a creative way. I did, however, note two spelling errors on two consecutive slides, where “initial” was misspelled as “inital”. Regardless, your slides were visually pleasing with appropriate information and font size easy to read. Your presentation’s conclusion was embedded at the end of your priority solution, which I believe was appropriate, since it was clearly stated and summarized your presentation well. All presenters spoke loud and clear, at a reasonable pace, and answers to questions were answered appropriately. Your presentation took a total of 18:30 minutes, which is just shy of the 19–20-minute window. Evidence-based literature was also incorporated throughout your slides to support the information being conveyed. All 11 references are within the last 5 years and credible. Your reference list is in Vancouver style and done correctly and makes the presentation slides less cluttered compared to APA in-text citations. However, the rubric asks for APA. Overall, amazing presentation! It was a hard one to critique.
Thank you for acknowledging the weight of your topic by starting your presentation with a content warning. The group provided an excellent explanation of the chosen population and inclusion criteria. The video you chose to include was a great form of media that highlighted the importance of your topic with statistics. If more time was available, I would suggest adding another form of media that would encourage class participation. Your environmental scan included global resources, as well as Canadian and Kamloops-based resources.
The benefits and challenges of each solution were clearly explained and thoroughly detailed. Solution one studied in-person trained interpreters to bridge the language gap between mental health care practitioners and refugees. Though they are used in multiple countries, including Canada, it is not currently being used in Kamloops due to lack the funding and staffing. Solution two explained Teaching Recovery Techniques based on trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy for children to normalize reactions to trauma, offer emotional support, and provide coping strategies. Though I think this would be a helpful solution due to the high demand and interest, Kamloops does not have the education and financial resources available to make this a feasible project.
Solution three explored adapting a Refugee Health screening test to assess high priority mental health concerns, such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression. The feasibility of this project was demonstrated by highlighting the flexibility of implementation – i.e. it can be completed with existing health assessments, performed by multiple healthcare professionals, offered in a variety of settings, as well as offered in multiple languages. Though it could increase healthcare system traffic and usage, it would reduce the barriers around mental health care and address a service gap in Kamloops. I agree that this is the most feasible and the most low-cost solution to implement in Kamloops, as well as throughout Interior Health sites. It would be interesting to see what the adaptation process of the assessment would look like and who would be included.
I enjoyed that you used the perspective that we currently have as 4th year nursing students, however, it would have been interesting to see if your priority solution changed if you used a different perspective. You considered the limitations of our current system, detailed how the project to run if resources were available, and acknowledged the cultural differences that impact views regarding mental health care.
Your presentation was delivered clearly, in a conversational tone, at a comfortable speed. Slides included graphics and text formatting choices which organized the content, allowed for ease of reading, and was not overwhelming with information. I enjoyed the map background and the images chosen, however, more colour could have been include to make it more visually interesting. I noted great flow and smooth transitions between slides, topics, and presenters. Your presentation took just over 19 minutes to complete which allows for full marks. Your group thoroughly answered all questions, and all presenters were able to connect research to their answers. Footnotes were used for referencing and the reference page was completed in accordance with APA 7 rules.
